The Reuse the Tube Challenge was created to address an ever-growing problem. As the popularity of bicycles continue to increase around the world, the number of inner tubes that get tossed away is also increasing. Since bicycle tubes cannot be recycled like plastic, there are limited uses for damaged bicycle tubes. ecoimagine is one of several businesses around the world looking to tackle this problem. Listed below is an overview of how ecoimagine plans to Reuse The Tube and what you can do to contribute.
The Magnitude of the Problem
It is estimated that there are over 1 billion bikes on the planet which means there are more than twice that many bicycle tubes at least. Recent estimates put discarded bicycle tubes (tubes sent to the landfill) at 150 million per year (and that is just for the UK)!
Because bicycle tubes do not biodegrade and there are limited products that can utilize the rubber, tubes are either repurposed or thrown away. Unfortunately, the latest stats are indicating that 99% of tubes are tossed into the landfill, not reused, so there is a lot of work to do.
What Is ecoimagine Doing With Damaged Bicycle Tubes?
Since 2019, ecoimagine's mission has been to extend the life of materials that can be recycled and repurposed into eco products you'll love. In April 2021, ecoimagine launched the Kaden & Kai Bicycle Tube Bracelet Collection to make use of damaged bicycle tubes.
The result? Amazingly soft, stylish, waterproof bracelets worn by trendsetters across the US.
ecoimagine's 2021 Reuse The Tube Challenge
In 2020, ecoimagine made it our challenge to create an eco product people would love out of damaged bicycle tubes.
In 2021, ecoimagine's challenge is to collect and repurpose 500 bicycle tubes by the end of the year. Given that we just launched the Kaden & Kai collection a few months ago, we see this as an aggressive, but doable goal.
How You Can Help
There are a few ways you can make the Reuse The Tube Challenge succeed.
#1 Send us your gently damaged bicycle tubes and we'll send you a free bracelet!
We love dark black inner tubes that are about 1.75-2.125 in diameter. The tubes that work best are Kenda, Bontrager and Cheng Shin tubes. Please do not send extremely worn, wide or very thin tires as these do not make good bracelets!
You can send your tubes to: ecoimagine, 10 Richmond Circle, Lexington, MA 02421. Be sure to include your email address, so we can send you a discount code for your free bracelet! Note: Each customer gets one free bracelet of your choice per year.
#2 Donate to ecoimagine's Indiegogo campaign.
The purpose of our indiegogo campaign is to raise money to buy professional laser cutters, so we can make our eco products faster. By donating to our indiegogo campaign, you are helping us turn tubes into sellable product at a faster rate which allows us to use more tubes in a shorter time period.
As a perk for donating $25, $50 or $75, you will get 50% off retail!

#3 Buy Kaden & Kai Bicycle Tube Bracelets on ecoimagine.com!
The more bracelets we sell, the more tubes we use. It's that simple! We created Kaden & Kai Bicycle Tubes to extend the life of bicycle tubes. Reusing the tube was our goal from the beginning. Now it is to grow 10x every year.
